The Dual Monarchy governed Bosnia-Herzegovina with its own civil administration, while allowing the Turks to maintain administrative control over the Sandzak. The Austro-Hungarian administration introduced new laws, economic and administrative reforms throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. Under Austro-Hungarian rule the province prospered, began to modernise its infrastructure, and developed an industrial base.
